The number of asylum seekers in Sweden is decreasing – down 30 percent
Stockholm – The number of asylum seekers in Sweden decreased by around 30 percent last year compared with the previous year.
The number of asylum seekers was 6,735 in 2025, compared with 9,645 the year before. This can also be compared with the average during 2016–2022 of just over 20,000 asylum seekers per year, according to the country’s government.
Asylum-related immigration remains the lowest in 40 years. A total of 79,684 residence permits were granted in 2025.
Ukrainian refugees who have been granted protection under the EU’s Temporary Protection Directive are not included in the asylum statistics.
