The negotiations for a treaty on plastic pollution are dragging on

Geneva (Switzerland) – Negotiators from 185 countries were engaged in intense discussions on Thursday to try to reconcile very distant interests and forge the first international treaty to combat plastic pollution.
In a message on X, French President Emmanuel Macron called for “adopting a text that matches the urgency of the environmental and health crisis.”
But the chances of reaching an agreement seem very slim, given the deep divisions that remain between the two camps. To solve the conundrum, Kenyan Environment Minister Deborah Barasa suggested concluding a treaty now and working on certain aspects in more detail later. (August 14, 2025)
