The European Commission praised Slovakia for its quick response to the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease

Bratislava – The Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety (DG SANTE) of the European Commission expressed recognition to the Slovak Republic for the swift and decisive actions taken in response to the recent detection of the foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMD) on the territory of the country. This was stated on Wednesday by the Government Office of the Slovak Republic, as reported by TASR.
In an official letter addressed to the Chief Veterinary Officer of the Slovak Republic, the director of the Directorate for Food, Animal, and Plant Crisis Preparedness, Bernard Van Goethem, praised the commitment and effective implementation of the recommendations of the EU Veterinary Emergency Team (EUVET). He particularly emphasized the importance of the immediate introduction of emergency vaccination, which played a key role in managing the crisis.
According to the Government Office, the Commission also positively assessed Slovakia’s proactive approach, including the preventive culling of animals based on thorough epidemiological assessment. The measures were carried out in accordance with EU legislation and expert recommendations. Slovakia has demonstrated a high level of preparedness and the ability to respond quickly in the interest of animal health protection, according to the Commission.
The transparency of the Slovak Republic throughout the management of the FMD outbreak, including timely provision of data and updates, was also highly appreciated. The activation of the EU civil protection mechanism additionally allowed for effective coordination and logistical support during the critical phase of the response.
The Government Office of the Slovak Republic reminded that the European Commission confirmed its readiness to continue providing Slovakia with expert and material support if needed. It also mentioned the availability of vaccines from the activated EU antigen bank, which are ready for immediate delivery. (April 23)
