The EU “suspends” its response to Trump’s tariffs for 90 days

Brussels – The European Union will suspend its response to Donald Trump’s tariffs for 90 days in order to “give negotiations a chance,” announced the President of the Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, on Thursday.

“We acknowledge President Trump’s decision” to suspend part of the tariffs, she stated in a message on social media platform X, following the spectacular turnaround of the occupant of the White House.

“We want to give negotiations a chance,” assured the head of the European executive, thus announcing the suspension of measures adopted by the 27 member states on Wednesday afternoon: tariffs on a range of American products such as motorcycles, soybeans, or poultry.

To respond to the other tariffs (automobiles and the generalized 20%), measures were theoretically to be presented at the beginning of next week.

“If the negotiations are not satisfactory, our countermeasures will come into effect,” warned Ursula von der Leyen on Thursday. She added that “all options remain on the table.” (April 10, 2025)
