The Commission calls on member states to implement the new European cybersecurity directive for the transport sector

“The Commission is working with the European Union Agency for Cybersecurity, within the framework of ENISA, as well as with national authorities, airports, and airlines, to restore operations and support passengers,” said the Commission’s spokesperson Thomas Renier, regarding the cyberattacks that affected check-in systems at the airports of Brussels, Berlin, and London.

He referred to hybrid threats and potential attacks on EU transport, emphasizing that member states must remain vigilant and be fortified with the new European cybersecurity directive as a compass. “What happened underscores, once again, the importance of fully transposing the NIS2 directive in the field of cybersecurity. The NIS2 (Network and Information Security Directive 2) is a European directive on cybersecurity, which has identified aviation and transport in general as sectors of high criticality. Therefore, we call on all member states to swiftly and effectively transpose the NIS2 directive into their systems,” he emphasized. (22/9/25)
