The Bulgarian regions on the Black Sea should be treated equally to the others along the eastern border of the EU, the National Assembly insists

The Bulgarian regions bordering the Black Sea, on the eastern border of the European Union, should be treated equally with the other regions in the EU member states that border Ukraine, Belarus, and Russia. This is insisted upon by the Bulgarian parliament in a declaration adopted today in connection with the mid-term review of cohesion policy proposed by the European Commission.

The Bulgarian parliament calls on the European Parliament and the Council of the EU to take into account in the upcoming legislative and program documents of the Union the treatment of the Black Sea region equally with the other regions on the eastern border of the EU.

The National Assembly urges the Council of Ministers to continue to uphold this position in the context of the mid-term review of cohesion policy, as well as in the upcoming negotiations on the next multiannual financial framework for the period 2028 – 2034.

The Black Sea region, part of which is on the territory of Bulgaria, is exposed to increasing security risks, economic and environmental consequences as a result of the ongoing war in Ukraine, which has a direct and significant effect on the eastern regions of Bulgaria, the declaration states.

The chairman of the parliamentary committee on European affairs Dimităr Gărdjev explained in the plenary hall that the declaration is related to the proposed change in the regulatory framework of cohesion policy and the proposed emergency support for regions on the eastern border of the EU, bordering Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus, given the challenges to their security and geopolitical significance.
