T20 Runs Record: Pollard Overtakes Gayle?

T20 runs record saw an unprecedented turnaround in statistics with Kieron Pollard taking over from Chris Gayle as the top run-scorer in men’s T20 cricket history.

Veteran West Indies all-rounder Kieron Pollard grabbed the attention of fans with an unbeaten century for MI New York against Washington Freedom in the Major League Cricket (MLC) match held at Grand Prairie Stadium in 2026. Pollard virtually upended the T20 batting leader board despite his side’s 30-run loss.

Pollard got on the 100-run score for the first time at the century mark in his long career at the crease, which started in 2006. He now has 14,582 runs for his career in T20 cricket, with this one, he broke that record to claim the lead from former teammate Chris Gayle, who played 14,562 runs in his career. Pollard is at the summit of a list that features some of the world’s T20 legends, although the difference is not that great.

The revised list now sees the likes of Alex Hales, Jos Buttler, David Warner, Virat Kohli and Shoaib Malik now coming after the West Indies duo, showcasing the quality of the T20 consistency that is available on the global stage, across generations and teams.

Pollard made a light-hearted apology to Gayle, the “Universe Boss,” after the game, calling the milestone “special.” He gave credit to Gayle for his supremacy over over 10 years, and highlighted the respect he had for her as two stalwarts of West Indies cricket.

Pollard also noted that it is tough to score big when you are a lower order hitter, in the middle of the order, typically at No. 6 or 7. He highlighted that the ability to perform in pressure situations at the end of the game in franchise leagues around the world has been a key factor in his longevity and consistency in T20 cricket.
