Swedish specialty receives EU protection

Brussels – Only Sweden has Swedish coffee cheese – and now it is also protected in the EU.
The northern specialty has been approved in the EU’s register of products with protected designation of origin.
“Traditionally cut into small pieces and placed in hot coffee, it is enjoyed warm, where its soft texture and delicate flavor are enhanced,” states a press release from the EU Commission.
Coffee cheese is a fresh cheese made from unhomogenized milk from reindeer, goat, or cow, primarily in the northern landscapes of Lapland, Norrbotten, Västerbotten, Jämtland, Härjedalen, and Ångermanland. The coffee cheese is cut into pieces and added to coffee.
There are now over 3,600 protected products in the EU’s register.
