Sweden’s Migration Minister: Risk of a new wave of refugees to Europe

Stockholm – The Swedish government sees a risk of a new wave of refugees to Europe if the situation worsens between Iran and Israel.
“There is a risk, and we should not hide that. Therefore, it is important that we hold on to this and do not repeat the mistakes of 2015, but that we maintain a continued strict asylum policy,” says the Swedish Minister for Migration Johan Forssell.
The EU is closely monitoring the situation in the Middle East and following any potential refugee flows, but at present, there are no signs that many more are fleeing the region, according to EU Commissioner Magnus Brunner, responsible for home affairs and migration issues.
“The situation between Israel and Iran worries us a lot; it is on the agenda every day. But it is more of a security issue at the moment,” he said during a visit to Stockholm on Monday.
Sweden is prepared if the situation worsens, says Johan Forssell, who believes that the EU should focus on support in the region, establish safe zones, and assist with aid.
