Sweden wants a plan for return to Syria – appeals to Denmark

Brussels – Sweden is pushing for EU measures to facilitate the return of Syrian refugees home.
“Excellent with EU-wide transport solutions for example,” says Johan Forssell, who is the country’s Minister for Migration.
For this week’s ministerial meeting in Luxembourg, Forssell has brought a letter to Denmark urging action on the issue as the country takes over the presidency of the EU Council from July 1.
“I have high hopes that the Danes will gather support for this. We notice that this is very prioritized: the return in general, but Syrians in particular,” Forssell tells TT.
The push comes after the EU lifted its sanctions against Syria in the hope that the country can get back on its feet after nearly 14 years of civil war. This opens the door for nearly 800,000 Syrians in the EU to return to Syria, individuals who for example have temporary residence permits or lack EU citizenship. For Sweden, this concerns around 20,000 people.
