Sweden is set to miss climate targets 20 years ahead

Stockholm – Sweden appears to be missing the set climate goals until 2045, according to an annual report to the government from the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency. None of the climate goals for 2020, 2040, or 2045 seem to be achievable, according to the authority.
In a text message comment to TT, climate and environment minister Romina Pourmokhtari writes: “The government is working on several measures to improve Sweden’s conditions to meet the EU goals.” She does not mention what measures this may involve.
It looks particularly difficult for the climate goal related to forests and land, the so-called LULUCF. Sweden’s significant distance from that goal is primarily due to lower forest growth. Together with logging and natural decline, the shortfall becomes substantial.
However, Sweden still has good opportunities to meet the EU’s 2030 targets for the transport sector (ESR), according to Pourmokhtari.
The national goal for Sweden is to reduce emissions from the transport sector by 70 percent by 2030. The distance to the goal is 6 million tons of carbon dioxide.
