South Africa Returns to Lord’s After WTC Win

South Africa’s ICC World Test Championship (WTC) team returned to Lord’s on Monday to celebrate their Ultimate Test win against Australia. Two days after winning the WTC mace by five wickets, the 15-man squad and support crew returned to the home of cricket for a final celebration before returning home.

Players took pictures with the Test mace, relived the wins, and enjoyed the atmosphere at the historic field where they made history over the weekend. South African all-rounder Wiaan Mulder told ICC digital at Lord’s that the celebrations were his best.

“These two days have been great. Unusual celebrations. Mulder said the team is thrilled and the Home of Cricket is the perfect spot to do it.

Mulder said the nerves before the final and the nonstop celebrations afterward kept him up at night.

Personally, I think it’s the Western Province crew. He said Kyle Verreynne, Dane Paterson, David Bedingham, and (batting coach) Ashwell Prince are our vibe team leaders and have gone all out. He thanked Travis Head and Pat Cummins for their sportsmanship and that Head had complimented him after the final.

“Heady and Patty are great guys. I called Heady last night. He was delighted for us despite disappointment. The game was played with terrific spirit, Mulder said.

On Saturday, South Africa defeated defending champions Australia by five wickets at The Lord’s Cricket Ground to win the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25. The title was their first since 1998, when they won the inaugural men’s Champions Trophy, then called the Knockout Trophy.

Bowling out South Africa for 138 gave the reigning champions a 74-run first-innings lead midway through the final Test. After scoring 207 in the second innings, Australia set a 282-run goal but failed to capitalize.

South Africa’s batting unit defeated Australia’s star-studded bowling arsenal in the last innings and chased down the score for five wickets. Aiden Markram led the way with 136, while skipper Temba Bavuma added a half-century.
