Slovenian Prime Minister supports efforts for peace in Ukraine

Ljubljana – Slovenia supports all efforts for lasting peace in Ukraine, Slovenian Prime Minister Robert Golob announced today, who participated remotely in an informal meeting of EU member state leaders regarding a new American proposal to end the war in Ukraine. Golob advocated for a peace process that must be initiated by talks between the leaders of Russia, Vladimir Putin, and Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky.

“Slovenia supports all efforts to achieve lasting peace in Ukraine. We can only achieve this through an immediate ceasefire and the start of a peace process that must be initiated by direct talks between the Ukrainian and Russian presidents,” Golob said.

The message was released by his office after Golob attended an informal meeting of the European Council with other EU member state leaders, where they were briefed on the developments related to the American proposal to end the war in Ukraine, which was announced last week.

Slovenian Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon emphasized last Thursday that we cannot agree to changing internationally recognized borders by force. Even before all the details of the plan were known, she stated that any peace plan must also include Ukraine and Europe and respect international law and the United Nations Charter.

The American draft plan, consisting of 28 points, published at the end of last week, among other things, envisions that Kyiv will hand over the occupied Crimean Peninsula and the regions of Donetsk and Luhansk to Moscow, significantly reduce its military, and commit that Ukraine will not join NATO. It also mentions the expansion of the EU, the lifting of sanctions against Russia, and the frozen Russian assets under sanctions, which are mostly in the EU or European countries.
