Slovenia will propose measures to Brussels due to US sanctions against the ICC judge from Slovenia

Ljubljana – The Slovenian Prime Minister Robert Golob expressed regret over Thursday’s decision by the U.S. to impose sanctions against four judges of the International Criminal Court (ICC), including the judge from Slovenia Beti Hohler. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Slovenia will propose the immediate activation of the European Union’s blocking statute, as Hohler is an EU citizen.

According to the American side, the four ICC judges “actively engaged in illegal and unfounded actions of the ICC directed against the U.S. or our close ally Israel.”

Slovenia, according to the Prime Minister’s cabinet, will provide full support to Hohler in carrying out her mandate at the ICC, which she began in 2024 for a nine-year term.

Hohler is also the only EU citizen among the ICC judges against whom sanctions have been imposed. “Slovenia will propose the immediate activation of the European Union’s blocking statute due to the inclusion of an EU citizen on the U.S. sanctions list,” they stated.

“Slovenia is and will continue to be an unwavering supporter of the independence and impartiality of this central international criminal judicial institution and the work of its staff,” the Prime Minister’s cabinet announced. (June 6)
