Slovenia welcomed the signing of the agreement between BiH and Frontex

Brussels – The European Union and Bosnia and Herzegovina today signed an agreement in Brussels on operational activities that the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex) will carry out in BiH. The signing of the agreement was also welcomed by the Slovenian Ministry of the Interior, which described it as a significant step forward in migration management.

According to the European Commission, the agreement will enable Frontex to conduct joint operations with BiH and deploy its permanent staff anywhere along the country’s borders, including borders with non-EU member states and border crossings, including airports.

The Slovenian Ministry of the Interior believes that the deployment of a permanent Frontex unit with executive powers will positively impact both the management of BiH’s borders and the management of the EU’s external borders.

“The conclusion of the agreement will represent a significant advancement in the EU’s efforts to develop and implement European integrated border management in the Western Balkans region and in managing migration flows along the Western Balkan migration route,” they added.

Strengthening cooperation in border management is a key part of the EU’s efforts in collaboration with partners from the Western Balkans to prevent illegal border crossings and enhance security in the region. According to the European Commission, joint efforts have already yielded results, as the number of illegal border crossings decreased from 145,600 in 2022 to 21,520 in 2024, continuing into 2025 with an additional 58% drop in the first four months.
