Slovenia in favour of the provisional application of the EU-Mercosur agreement

Brussels – Slovenia is in favor of the temporary application of the trade agreement signed on Saturday between the EU and the South American trade bloc Mercosur. As Prime Minister Robert Golob said on Thursday upon his arrival at the EU summit in Brussels, Slovenia will follow Germany’s positions. Germany supports the temporary application of the agreement.

“It must be understood that Germany is our most important trading partner. And we will follow the positions that we will shape together. Among them is almost certainly this temporary implementation of the agreement,” Golob said.

After the European Parliament on Wednesday asked the EU Court of Justice for an opinion on the trade agreement with Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay, thereby postponing its ratification, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz at the World Economic Forum in Davos advocated for temporary implementation.

At the beginning of the month, despite opposition from Slovenian farmers, Slovenia supported the signing of the agreement with Mercosur in a vote in the EU Council. On Thursday, the parliamentary committee for agriculture called on the government to actively strive to protect Slovenian agriculture and to implement enhanced control over the import of agricultural and food products from the four South American countries.
