Slovenia for maintaining animal welfare as an EU priority
Brussels – At the meeting of the EU Council for Agriculture and Fisheries, which was attended from Slovenia by the State Secretary at the Ministry of Agriculture Maša Žagar, Slovenia called for maintaining animal welfare as an EU priority.
With the written support of Austria, Belgium, Germany and Malta, Slovenia called on the European Commission to ensure that animal welfare remains a visible and forward-looking EU priority in the future as well, the ministry announced.
“In policy-making, it is necessary to ensure the continuation of the work done so far and a balanced approach that combines ambitious goals with feasibility, proportionality and the socio-economic effects on farmers and other stakeholders,” emphasized State Secretary Žagar.
She pointed out the need for clear and predictable rules that at the same time strengthen the competitiveness, sustainability and resilience of the sector. According to the ministry, the initiative received broad support from the member states, which recognized animal welfare as a cornerstone of European agricultural and food policy.
Slovenia also joined France’s call for a faster amendment of the regulation under which mandatory indication of origin would apply to more food products. (27 January)
