Šimečka: Fico asks the EU for a unified response to tariffs, but its unity is betrayed

Bratislava – Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) is asking the EU for a unified response to American tariffs, but he undermines that unity with his planned visit to Moscow. This was stated on Monday by the chairman of the opposition Progressive Slovakia (PS) Michal Šimečka in connection with Fico’s meeting with representatives of the automotive industry, TASR reports.

“Robert Fico extends one hand to Brussels to ask for help for our car manufacturers while showing our partners the middle finger with the other hand. This is not how foreign policy is conducted, and it is hypocritical even for Robert Fico. Because if he is asking the European Union for a unified response to American tariffs, a response that will help our employees, he cannot at the same time undermine European unity by going to bow to a war criminal in Moscow,” he described the situation.

“I urge you, Mr. Prime Minister, do not go to Moscow, because by doing so you are betraying not only our geopolitical interests, our security, but ultimately also our economic interests,” added the chairman of PS.

After the meeting with representatives of the automotive industry, the Prime Minister of the Slovak Republic Robert Fico stated, among other things, that the government wants to focus on utilizing EU funds to support the automotive industry or to introduce mechanisms like scrappage schemes at the European level.

On Friday, May 9, celebrations will take place in Moscow to mark the 80th anniversary of the victory over fascism. Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico will likely be the only Prime Minister of the European Union to attend the celebrations in Red Square. (May 5)
