She will simplify AI in the EU

Brussels – Swedish Arba Kokalari, who represents the Moderate Party in the European Parliament, has been appointed so-called rapporteur on the simplifications to AI rules that the EU Commission proposed in November.

“If Europe is to catch up with the US and China in technological development, our AI rules must have a better balance between innovation and protection. Unnecessary bureaucracy and conflicting rules benefit neither consumers nor companies,” Kokalari writes in a statement.

These include, among other things, proposals for more exemptions for small businesses and for certain AI rules to start applying later than planned.

The simplifications are part of the EU Commission’s ongoing initiative to reduce bureaucracy. Disagreements over how much should be simplified have, however, led to political disputes, which among other things prompted Swedish MEP Jörgen Warborn (also of the Moderate Party) to seek support from the far right in the EU in order to push through his simplification proposals last autumn.
