Sexual violence against minors: MEPs in favor of abolishing the statute of limitations

European Parliament (Strasbourg, France) – MEPs voted on Tuesday in Strasbourg in favor of abolishing statutes of limitations in cases of sexual violence against minors, a debate that spans all of Europe.

After this very large vote in the first reading (599 in favor, 2 against, and 62 abstentions), the European Parliament will have to negotiate with the member states and the Commission, which intends to extend the statutes of limitations but not abolish them.

“There can be no time limit for justice when it comes to sexual violence against children,” emphasized Dutch MEP Jeroen Lenaers (EPP, right), who is in charge of the text in Parliament.

Statutes of limitations – the period beyond which legal action is no longer admissible – vary significantly from one European state to another.

Some have very short statutes of limitations that expire before the victim reaches the age of 40 years.

In France, the statute of limitations for rape is 30 years from the victim’s coming of age and 20 years from the facts if she was an adult. (June 17, 2025)
