Saková: Slovakia has the knowledge and infrastructure to implement new nuclear technologies important for the EU

Bratislava – Slovakia has the knowledge and infrastructure to become a center for the implementation of innovative nuclear technologies important for the entire EU. This was stated by Minister of Economy Denisa Saková (Hlas-SD) in connection with her working visit to Italy and the signing of a contract for the establishment of a joint Slovak-Italian enterprise Center for the Development of the Use of Spent Nuclear Fuel (CVP). The Ministry of Economy (MH) of the Slovak Republic announced this on Wednesday, TASR reports.

According to her, this enterprise will work on the development and deployment of an advanced modular reactor cooled by liquid lead and capable of reusing spent nuclear fuel multiple times.

“We have the know-how and infrastructure to become a center for the development and implementation of these technologies, which are important for the entire European Union. The issue of the development and distribution of nuclear fuel will also be one of the fundamental questions of the future, especially in light of the negative consequences brought by the proposed EU plan to end the import of energy carriers from the Russian Federation,” Saková stated.

CVP is a joint project of the research and development company NewCleo and Slovak partners VUJE and the Nuclear and Decommissioning Company (JAVYS).

The CVP company, with a 51% representation of the Slovak Republic through JAVYS, will focus on the development and deployment of innovative fourth-generation modular reactors (AMR) in Slovakia. The first phase of the project, namely the feasibility study, will be financed exclusively by NewCleo, according to the Ministry of Economy.

“Not only the Italian government has understood what Slovakia has been saying for a long time – that the green transition and decarbonization must not jeopardize European competitiveness. Thanks to nuclear power plants, Slovakia is among the countries with one of the cleanest energy mixes in the world. Moreover, due to our extensive knowledge in the decommissioning of nuclear facilities and the management of spent fuel and radioactive waste, JAVYS is also prepared to provide expertise in preparing for the implementation of the Italian national repository,” the minister added.
