Saeed Ajmal Criticises Handling of Babar Azam
Former spinner of Pakistan, Saeed Ajmal has spoken in a strong opinion about treatment of the national players, especially the star batsman Babar Azam. In a recent interview with one of the local sports platforms, Ajmal emphasized the importance of coaches in creating confidence instead of fully owning responsibility of development of the players.
Ajmal, his spin coach also and a coach of the Pakistan team stated that when a side is on the move, it is only up to the coaches to give players confidence. The coaches are not in charge of instructing everything. But in case a player is passing through a tough period, the coach must engage him or her, and advise the player on how to come out of the tough period.
He singly condemned the attitude of the management towards Babar Azam claiming that the batsman was subject to criticism and lack of motivation by the people. Babar Azam had been so disappointed that it was openly mentioned that he is not the type of player that T20Is require. Unless you care about your players, how is it possible that they learn through you? Ajmal questioned.
The ex former spinner also criticized that the performance of Babar in the T20 was underestimated as compared to the other players. Have you ever seen any of our players play T20 different? Have you ever gotten a player in your team whose strike rate was higher than Babar Azam and was regarded as world-class? Rather, you humiliated him in the media, publicly, he added.
Ajmal undertook inconsistent selection of teams and handling of workloads whereby decisions involving Babar, his rest periods and captaincy burdened him unnecessarily. He also remarked on the habit of the previous head coach Mike Hesson to change the player- XI quite often, claiming it was a negative influence on the players given the fact that Pakistan had a unique team mentality.
Ajmal comments bring to the current debate on whether Pakistan cricket fosters its star players, and many fans have support to his call to question the conditions under which Babar Azam is handled, and how the management decision to opt for a particular player affects the performance of the team.
