Roswall: “We must think of nature conservation as an investment”

Brussels – An investment system similar to the trading of emission allowances. The EU Commission hopes to establish this to generate more money and interest in climate efforts.
Therefore, a roadmap towards an EU trade in so-called nature credits is now being launched.
“We must start thinking of nature conservation as an investment. It is about recognizing and rewarding actions that restore and preserve nature,” says Environment Commissioner Jessika Roswall at a press conference.
The credits will, for example, enable companies to invest in what landowners do to restore wetlands or protect their forests. However, the Commission’s roadmap currently mostly consists of the establishment of an expert group to develop common rules.
