Romania modernizes the Midia port through the POPAM program, improving the activity of fishermen in the Black Sea area

Bucharest – The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Romania supports the activities of fishermen in the Black Sea area by financing the modernization and expansion of the fishing infrastructure of the Midia port in Constanța County. The total financial allocation managed by the General Directorate of Fisheries – Management Authority for the Operational Program for Fisheries and Maritime Affairs (DGP AM POPAM) for this action is 9,282,910 euros.

By developing the infrastructure of this multifunctional port, the activities of fishermen will be greatly improved due to the facilitation of landing and preparation for market placement of catches from marine fishing and inland waters, while maintaining the quality of the products, as well as ensuring more efficient control of fishing activities and data collection, thus contributing to the sustainability of fishing in the area.

The Operational Program for Fisheries and Maritime Affairs (POPAM) 2021-2027 is funded by the European Fisheries and Maritime Affairs Fund (FEPAM), one of the five European Structural and Investment Funds (ESI) aimed at promoting economic growth and job-based recovery in Europe. FEPAM aims to support the common fisheries policy (CFP), the EU maritime policy, and international commitments in ocean governance, especially in the context of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The total financial allocation for the programming period 2021-2027, granted to Romania for this program, is 232,072,724 euros, of which the EU contribution represents 162,450,905 euros.

The implementation of this program aims to contribute to: the development of sustainable marine and inland commercial fishing; sustainable and competitive aquaculture that efficiently uses available resources; the organization of the fishing market, including strengthening fishing organizations and supporting the short marketing chain; the development of fishing areas, highlighting the opportunities offered by sustainable blue economy.
