Portugal was the third largest producer of tomatoes in the EU in 2024

Portugal was, last year, the third country with the highest tomato production in the European Union (EU), behind Italy and Spain, the community statistical office, Eurostat, reported today.
Data published today by Eurostat on the 2024 harvests reveal that Portugal was the third largest producer of tomatoes (1.7 million tons), behind Italy (six million tons) and Spain (4.5 million tons).
In total, last year, the EU harvested 62.2 million tons of fresh vegetables (including melons), which represents a 6% increase compared to the 58.8 million tons harvested in 2023.
According to the statistical office, Spain (14.8 million tons), Italy (13.9 million tons), and France (5.8 million tons) were the main producers of fresh vegetables in the EU, together representing 55% of the total harvest.
By types of vegetables, also last year, the harvested production in the EU increased compared to 2023: tomato production was 5% higher at 16.8 million tons, carrot production was 6% higher at 4.7 million tons, and onion production was 11% higher, at 7.0 million tons.
Among the EU countries, Italy was the largest producer of tomatoes in 2024, representing 36% of the total tomato harvest in the EU, followed by Spain (27%) and Portugal (10%).
For its part, the EU’s production of fruits, berries, and nuts (excluding citrus fruits, grapes, and strawberries) was 24.3 million tons in 2024.
This figure was 2% lower than the amount harvested in 2023.
The main fruit, berry, and nut producing countries in the EU in 2024 were Italy (5.4 million tons), Spain (4.3 million tons), and Poland (4.1 million tons), which together represented 57% of the EU’s production.
