Portugal says it is “well thought out” to use immobilized Russian assets but asks to avoid “future implications”

The Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, said today that the proposal to use frozen Russian assets to support Ukraine is a “well-thought-out solution,” warning that it is necessary to strengthen it and prevent any “failure or future implication.”

“I believe that what is being envisioned is a solution that has been well thought out,” said Luís Montenegro, upon entering an informal meeting of the European Council in Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark.

The Prime Minister added that “now what matters is to strengthen the proposal from a legal standpoint” of the European Commission, “so that there are no failures or future implications.”

Portugal wants to be “an active part” in this process, Luís Montenegro acknowledged.

The Prime Minister argued that the solution has the approval of the Portuguese Government because it ensures that “no more money” will be mobilized.

“We will use the frozen assets to finance Ukraine’s capacity building,” he concluded.
