Plenković: respect territorial integrity of Ukraine and ensure deterrence guarantees

ZAGREB – Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković said on Tuesday that any future peace agreement for Ukraine must protect the territorial integrity of the country and provide guarantees that will deter Russia from further aggression.
Plenković wrote on X that he participated in a meeting of the European Council and the so-called coalition of the willing, allies of Ukraine who discussed with U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday in Washington the path to peace.
“I emphasized that it is important to achieve a just and lasting peace that will protect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine and provide it with strong security guarantees. This contributes to both European and global security,” said Plenković.
“We all advocate for the soonest possible end to the war that has claimed a large number of lives,” the Prime Minister emphasized, adding that comprehensive support for the Ukrainian people and President Volodymyr Zelensky will continue.
After the summit with Putin on Friday in Alaska, Trump met on Monday at the White House with Zelensky and the leaders of NATO and the EU. According to participants, discussions were held on security guarantees for Ukraine that would be provided by European allies in coordination with the U.S.
Zelensky said that the guarantees will likely be elaborated within ten days and that territorial issues related to a potential peace agreement will be worked out between Ukraine and Russia. (August 19, 2025)
