Party leaders in the EP call for concrete and tangible EU support for Greenland and Denmark

Brussels – The European Parliament stands firmly in support of multilateralism and the rules-based international order and considers any attempt to undermine the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Denmark and Greenland a violation of international law and the Charter of the United Nations, according to the joint statement of the Conference of Presidents of the EP.

– The European Parliament calls on the European Commission and the European Council to define concrete and tangible support for Greenland and Denmark, respecting the principles and law of the EU, international law and the NATO Charter, it is added in the statement of the Conference of Presidents, which is composed of the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, and the leaders of the eight political groups in the EP.

The heads of the groups in the European Parliament emphasize that they “unequivocally condemn the statements” made by the Administration of US President Donald Trump regarding Greenland, which represent “an obvious challenge to international law, to the principles of the UN Charter and to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of a NATO ally”.

– Such statements are unacceptable and have no place in relations between democratic partners, it is emphasized in the statement issued after last night’s meeting of the Conference of Presidents, which was also attended by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas.

The statement adds that the security of the Arctic is a strategic priority for the European Union and the European Parliament is firmly committed to its protection.

– The EU’s Arctic strategy goes beyond mere security concerns and our commitment to strengthening sustainable development and cooperation with the citizens of the region is unwavering. The Kingdom of Denmark, including Greenland, is a member of NATO and is fully covered by the Alliance’s collective security guarantees. The European Parliament will continue to strengthen European defense capabilities and ensure that EU member states honor their obligations to NATO, including through sustainable investments in defense and a strong presence in the Arctic region, the EP leaders point out.

They add that the security of the Arctic is guaranteed within NATO, and Denmark has agreements with key partners, including the US, for the protection of the region.

– Decisions relating to Denmark and Greenland belong solely to Denmark and Greenland, in accordance with the relevant constitutional arrangements and agreements between Denmark and Greenland, the statement says.

It recalls that in 1916, the US, through a treaty with Denmark, confirmed full Danish sovereignty over Greenland.

– With this treaty, the US recognized that the whole of Greenland rightfully constitutes Danish territory. External attempts to change the status quo are unacceptable, it is added in the statement of the Conference of Presidents of the EP. (15 January 2026)
