Paris-based Mistral AI eyes $1 billion raise at $10 billion valuation to lead Europe’s AI independence charge

According to media reports, French AI startup Mistral AI, the fast-growing European AI innovator, is preparing to raise an additional $1 billion (€863 million) in funding, targeting a valuation of $10 billion (€8.6 billion).
The company, built by former engineers from Meta and Google DeepMind, focuses on developing open-weight, modular AI models and has already attracted major attention from global investors including Nvidia, Andreessen Horowitz, and Abu Dhabi’s MGX fund.
Mistral was launched by Arthur Mensch, Guillaume Lample, and Timothée Lacroix, all alumni of École Polytechnique, with a mission to make cutting-edge AI accessible, transparent, and aligned with European data protection norms. Mensch is known for his contribution to DeepMind’s “Chinchilla” model, while Lample played a key role in building Meta’s LLaMA models.
Mistral quickly gained traction with a €105 million Seed round followed by a €600 million Series B raise, leading to a valuation of €5.8 billion as of June 2024. The upcoming fundraise is set to further accelerate its infrastructure build-out and global growth.
The startup’s flagship products – Mistral Large and the Mixtral series – have positioned it as a serious contender in the generative AI market, especially as an alternative to U.S. giants like OpenAI. Its commitment to open-source development, permissive licensing, and GDPR-aligned practices has helped attract key institutional clients including BNP Paribas, AXA, CMA CGM, and Stellantis.
Among its consumer-facing offerings, Le Chat – its proprietary chatbot – exceeded one million downloads in under two weeks from launching on mobile, a feat amplified by Free Mobile bundling the professional version with its subscriptions.
Beyond product traction, Mistral has forged pivotal partnerships. Microsoft invested €15 million in a convertible bond arrangement and now distributes Mistral’s models via Azure. CMA CGM has pledged €100 million over five years to integrate Mistral’s technology across logistics and customer service.
The company also plans to use upcoming capital to construct a data centre complex near Paris, including an €8.5 billion facility in Essonne powered by nuclear energy – a strategic play to bolster Europe’s technological sovereignty.
Mistral’s open-weight models offer unique appeal to sectors like healthcare, defence, and finance that demand transparency, security, and compliance with regional regulations. With nearly 400 employees expected by mid-2025, the company’s leadership structure reflects its broader commitment to inclusion, with women holding 50% of senior roles and a workforce representing over 15 nationalities.
Mistral was also recently featured in EU-Startups’ article “Europe’s quiet AI advantage: Why specialisation is outpacing scale,” which mentioned Mistral’s role in leading the continent’s shift toward vertical AI specialisation and enterprise integration.
