Pak VS Ind Asia Cup: Fakhar Zaman Out Controversy Explained

A controversial incident that surrounded the six-wicket win of India over Pakistan in their super four match at the Asia Cup 2025 was an incident with opener Fakhar Zaman. The left-hander was sacked in the third over after he nudged against one all-rounder, Hardik Pandya.

Wicketkeeper Sanju Samson leapt forward to get a low catch, though TV replays indicated the ball was only inches off the ground, and the on-the-field umpires sent the ruling up to the TV overhead.

The third umpire was allowed to be the final decision-maker since the ICC eliminated the soft signal rule in 2023. The decision was made after assessing several camera angles, which proved that Samson had caught him.

MCC Law 33.2.2.1 provides that a catch is valid if the ball is held securely, even though it touches the ground while under control. Slo-mo shots seemed to reveal that Samson had gloves on the ball and enclosed it, which further vindicated the umpire’s decision.

Although supported by the law, the call caused much social media controversy. According to many Pakistani fans, the ball seemed to land on the turf before Samson could make the catch, and the ability of the keeper and his reflexes were addressed enthusiastically by Indian fans.

Salman Ali Agha, a former Pakistan cricketer, replied that it resembled the ball bounced; however, he acknowledged that the decision was up to the third umpire.

The sacking was a premature success for India, who held Pakistan down to 171-5 and easily pursued the mark with nine balls left. Samson not only tilted the game due to his alert glove work but also brought back the debate as to whether technology is used when making split-second decisions in cricket.
