Opposition SaS: State interests mean nothing to Fico, undermining EU unity with Orbán

Bratislava – Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) together with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán are undermining the unity of the EU and agree that the West and Brussels are “bad.” This is the opinion of National Council (NR) SR member Juraj Krúpa (SaS). He also criticizes the Prime Minister for not caring about national-state interests, TASR reports.

“National-state interests have never meant anything to Fico, and yesterday we saw that he decided to throw them in the trash,” Krúpa said at a press conference on Tuesday in response to Fico’s meeting with Orbán in Bratislava on Monday (April 28). He claims that the Prime Minister is trampling on the legacy of national figures and everything that Slovakia stands for, just to have at least one partner in the European Union.

“Together with this partner, Viktor Orbán, they are undermining the unity of the European Union,” Krúpa added.

According to him, the partners agreed that the West and Brussels are “bad.” He claims they also agreed on coordinating the curtailment of freedoms and democracy in Slovakia. “How can Viktor Orbán be helpful in this, and is that why Viktor Orbán came to ask for Robert Fico’s help with the problems he is causing within the EU,” Krúpa stated.

Krúpa perceives Orbán as a politician with clear goals, but he is also looking for partners who will support him so that he does not lose his voting rights in the Union. However, he clearly indicates his revisionist tendencies towards Slovakia. Krúpa also reminded that Hungary is blocking the payment of 200 million euros from the European Peace Facility. The money is intended for compensation for donated equipment to Ukraine. He criticizes that this was not a topic of discussion between the Slovak and Hungarian Prime Ministers. He also missed a discussion on resolving the dispute regarding the construction of the Gabčíkovo – Nagymaros Waterworks System.

Fico met with the Hungarian Prime Minister on Monday in Bratislava. He claims that there are currently no open political issues that would disturb the countries. Orbán stated that we currently live in a system of “the best Slovak-Hungarian relations of all time.” Fico appreciated the sovereign positions of the Hungarian government, which they present in protecting Hungarian national interests in the EU. He also declared that as Prime Minister of the SR, he will never agree to anyone being punished in the EU for sovereign positions. (April 29)
