New US tariffs for the EU take effect

Washington (dpa) – At the direction of US President Donald Trump, new tariffs on imports from the EU and many other countries will take effect starting Thursday. According to US officials, the new regulation will be in effect from midnight (Eastern Time), which means in Germany from the morning (6:00 AM). However, the EU Commission believes that the start date for the 15 percent tariff on imports of most EU products into the US is August 8.
The new and varying tariffs apply to imports from around 70 countries as well as the European Union. The EU and the US had recently reached an agreement in the trade dispute. In addition to the 15 percent tariff, the EU has pledged significant investments in the US. There is still a need for coordination regarding the specific implementation of these investments.
For countries not listed on the list published last week for tariffs starting August 7, different tariffs apply. The US is also negotiating separately with China and Mexico. Additionally, Trump has threatened further tariffs against countries or has already ordered their imposition because they were doing business with Russia, thereby indirectly supporting the Kremlin in its war of aggression against Ukraine.
