Netherlands to deliver crucial part of Patriot to Ukraine

WARSAW (ANP) – It is an essential component that Ukraine is currently missing, said Brekelmans. “They are very happy about that.” According to the minister, this will allow the Ukrainians to reorganize their defense capabilities “which will strengthen their overall air defense.”
The Netherlands cannot provide a complete air defense system, but has previously given other important components to Ukraine, such as a launch device, said Brekelmans.
The Netherlands did not make any other commitments on Thursday, such as regarding participation in the so-called reassurance force in Ukraine during a ceasefire. Other member states have also not done so according to Brekelmans, partly because there are different opinions on the matter. “Some talk about a deterrent force, others about an assurance force, and still others about a training force.”
First, member states need to agree on what the goal of a possible mission is, what the mandate will be, and how to respond in case of escalation, believes Brekelmans. Military planners need to create an overview of what is needed based on that. “Then ultimately comes the real political decision of whether or not to participate.”
The Netherlands does not want a permanent brigade in Lithuania, as Germany is currently building. “For now, we will continue to rotate,” said Brekelmans.
