MS Dhoni retires from IPL?

Legend MS Dhoni of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on Wednesday admitted the physical toll of the game and the ambiguity surrounding his IPL future, thereby indicating that no definitive answer has been decided about whether IPL 2025 will be his last season.
Speaking following CSK’s exciting victory over Kolkata Knight Rider (KKR), the 43-year-old revealed his current physical challenges. He clarified that although he only performs during the two-month IPL season, keeping the required fitness calls for constant year-long practice.
Head coach Stephen Fleming has remarked that Dhoni’s knee problems have hampered his ability to bat for long stretches, hence the CSK icon has become increasingly less important this season.
Dhoni stepped in to bat at the 13th over in Wednesday’s game against KKR and supported Shivam Dube, thereby securing the win with a six off Andre Russell in the last over.
CSK is already out of playoff eligibility with just six points from twelve games—three wins and nine losses—and presently ranks lowest on the points list.
Dhoni underlined also the need of testing young players in actual match conditions rather than depending just on net sessions. Actual games are not like nets and practice matches. We like their attitude, mental toughness, and game awareness. At this level, that is absolutely what counts.
It is relevant to note that the former Indian captain participated in the IPL starting in 2008. Five IPL championships—in 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021, and 2023—have been won by CSK under his direction, therefore establishing its position as among the most successful teams in the history of the competition.
