Moldova reaffirms its European direction in the parliamentary elections on Sunday

The electorate of the Republic of Moldova predominantly expresses its pro-European option in the parliamentary elections.

Chisinau/Bucharest – The Action and Solidarity Party (PAS, pro-European) from the Republic of Moldova comfortably won the parliamentary elections on Sunday and will have the majority in Parliament with 55 mandates, according to partial official results.

The new legislature in Chisinau will also include four other parties that have surpassed the thresholds set by law: the Patriotic Electoral Bloc (BEP), the “Alternative” Electoral Bloc (BEA), Our Party (PN), and the Democracy at Home Party (PPDA).

The President of Romania, Nicuşor Dan, congratulated the Moldovan citizens for their “firm” vote in favor of continuing the country’s European path and assured that Romania will continue to help Moldova in its European journey and will continue projects that bring prosperity and a better quality of life for its citizens.

The Romanian Prime Minister, Ilie Bolojan, sent a congratulatory message to the Moldovan voters for their mobilization in the parliamentary elections on Sunday and for voting in the European direction, reiterating that the place of the Republic of Moldova is “in the great European family.”

“Personally, but also on behalf of the Government of Romania, we will stand by the Republic of Moldova on this path,” assured the Prime Minister.

The Romanian MEP Victor Negrescu, Vice President of the European Parliament, commented that the victory of pro-European forces in the Republic of Moldova is a strong signal for accession to the European Union, and the Council must promptly approve the start of negotiations on chapters.

”Moldovan citizens have sent a clear message: they want a European future. The results show that, despite the challenges and manipulation campaigns aimed at destabilizing the electoral process, pro-European forces emerged victorious. This victory is one of values: democracy, rule of law, transparency, and European solidarity,” said Negrescu.

According to him, the Republic of Moldova and, in particular, President Maia Sandu have given a lesson in democracy and resilience to the Western world.

“As Vice President of the European Parliament responsible for relations with the Republic of Moldova, I assure you of the full support of the European legislature. Europe and Romania win, and the Republic of Moldova is heading towards a common future with the European Union. By the end of 2028, the accession negotiations with the European Union can be finalized,” Negrescu conveyed.

The Republic of Moldova has candidate country status for accession to the European Union.

According to the latest official data, over 850,000 of the 2.4 million inhabitants of the Republic of Moldova have acquired Romanian citizenship between 1991 and 2024. (29.9.2025)
