Moldova: parliamentary elections on September 28 to confirm the European path

Chisinau – Moldova will hold its legislative elections on September 28, according to a decision announced Thursday by Parliament, a vote that will determine the trajectory of this former Soviet republic torn between European aspirations and Russian influence.
“Our task is to maintain stability and join the European Union in the next four years,” said President Maia Sandu, who severed ties with Russia after the launch of the war in neighboring Ukraine and opened accession negotiations with Brussels.
She was speaking in front of the chamber of 101 deputies, dominated by her Action and Solidarity party (center-right), after a large victory in the July 2021 election.
These new elections are expected to be tight after a highly contested presidential election and a referendum on the EU last year amid suspicions of Russian interference.
The two recent votes had been disrupted by massive vote buying, according to the police, which has opened investigations against more than 140,000 citizens. (April 17, 2025)
