MEP Catarina Martins demands that the EU condemn the alleged attack on the humanitarian flotilla

Strasbourg, France – The MEP from the BE, Catarina Martins, demanded today that the European Union (EU) condemn the alleged attack on a Portuguese-flagged vessel from a humanitarian flotilla and protect the participants who intend to head to the Gaza Strip.
“What should be happening is supporting those who are delivering humanitarian aid to Gaza, I haven’t heard a word from her about the global flotilla,” said the member of the Left Bloc, addressing the head of European diplomacy, Kaja Kallas, in a debate on the situation in the Gaza Strip, in the European Parliament (EP).
“Tonight, one of the boats, with a Portuguese flag, carrying [Swedish activist] Greta Thunberg, [the BE coordinator] Mariana Mortágua, and many other European citizens was hit by a drone,” she emphasized, also questioning EU leaders about Israel’s actions.
“What do [the President of the EP], Roberta Metsola, [the President of the European Commission], Ursula von der Leyen, and [the President of the European Council], António Costa, say? Where is your condemnation of this attack?” added Catarina Martins.
The MEP also called for the protection of citizens who are trying to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza.
Also stating that “Israel is killing with European weapons and means,” the MEP considered that the silence of the leaders “is complicit” and that “the accomplices of genocide are also genociders.” One of the vessels from the solidarity flotilla providing humanitarian aid to Gaza, which includes Portuguese in the delegation, was allegedly attacked “apparently by a drone” at the port of Tunis, accused today the UN special rapporteur, Francesca Albanese.
“The main boat of the flotilla (Family) was apparently attacked by a drone at the port of Tunis,” she stated on the social network X.
The initiative includes activist Miguel Duarte, BE coordinator Mariana Mortágua, and actress Sofia Aparício. (09/09/25)
