Lula in France: Agricultural sectors put pressure against the Mercosur agreement

Paris – French deputies gathered several agricultural sectors at the Assembly on Wednesday to reaffirm their opposition to the Mercosur agreement, “unacceptable in its current state” according to them, and to ensure that the subject is discussed during Brazilian President Lula’s visit to France.

This visit, which is set to begin on Thursday, “should be an opportunity for France to reaffirm its commitment to international exchanges based on fair, sustainable standards,” said Jean-François Guihard, president of the livestock and meat interprofessional organization (Interbev).

“We are gradually approaching the goal” of obtaining the opposition or abstention of at least four states representing more than 35% of the population of the European Union, “necessary to bring down the agreement,” assured centrist deputy and former Minister of Agriculture Stéphane Travert, who initiated this cross-party meeting.

French Minister of Agriculture Annie Genevard has obtained firm guarantees from Poland, Austria, and Hungary, the ministry indicates. Romania is hesitant and Belgium has chosen abstention. (May 4, 2025)
