Lisbon Declaration reaffirms commitment to the European project

LISBON – The President and the Prime Minister of Portugal signed today the Lisbon Declaration, which reiterates “Portugal’s firm commitment to the defense, enhancement, and strengthening of the European project,” 40 years after the signing of Portugal’s accession to the then EEC.
“Today, we reiterate Portugal’s firm commitment to the defense, enhancement, and strengthening of the European project, towards a more secure, just, innovative, and prosperous European Union that fosters social progress, economic growth, convergence, and cohesion, for the benefit of all citizens,” states the Lisbon Declaration, today signed by Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and Luís Montenegro, in a ceremony at the Jerónimos Monastery, the place where 40 years ago the Treaty of Accession of Portugal to the European Communities was signed.
The document reaffirms “Portugal’s commitment” to “the deepening of European integration, based on the values of respect for human dignity, tolerance, pluralism, freedom, democracy, equality, the rule of law, and respect for human rights.”
The Declaration acknowledges “the remarkable contribution of the European Union to the political, economic, and social development of Portugal,” while also “noting Portugal’s contribution to the strengthening and enrichment of the European project.” Among those present at the ceremony commemorating the 40th anniversary of the signing of the treaty were, among others, the President of the European Council, António Costa, the former President of the European Commission José Manuel Durão Barroso, and the commissioner for the 40th anniversary celebrations of the accession, former MEP Carlos Coelho.
