Kallas: ‘Europe’s security is not up for negotiation’

Brussels (dpa) – After the Alaska summit between US President Donald Trump and Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin, EU chief diplomat Kaja Kallas emphasizes the uncompromising stance towards Russia. “The security of Europe is not up for negotiation,” wrote the EU foreign affairs representative on platform X.
The actual cause of the Ukraine war is Russia’s imperialist foreign policy, “not an imaginary imbalance in the European security architecture.”
Trump’s determination to achieve a peace agreement is crucial. “The harsh reality, however, is that Russia has no intention of ending this war in the foreseeable future,” Kallas added. While the delegations met, Russia launched new attacks on Ukraine. “Putin is dragging out the negotiations and hopes to get away with it.”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is traveling to Washington on Monday. Zelensky will be accompanied to Washington by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. Other heads of state and government from Europe have also announced their attendance. (August 16)
