India Faces Key Player Doubt for Test

Indian media reported on Thursday that Karun Nair, who was returning to the team after 2017, was injured during practice before the first Test.

Nair returned to the Indian team after eight years with excellent domestic achievements and was anticipated to play in the Headingley Test against England on Friday. Reports say Nair was hit on the ribs by a quick delivery during practice and was in pain for a while.

Indian team management has not commented on his condition. His participation in the first match is questionable. The event occurred two days before the first Test of the five-match series between India and England, which also began the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025–27 cycle for both teams.

Nair, slated to play his first Test since 2017, was hit on the ribs by bowler Prasidh Krishna during the net session. The right-hand hitter, who became the second Indian to score a Test triple-century, was benched despite strong performances.

After a strong domestic season in 2024-25, including a double century in the India A vs England Lions series and a key role in Vidarbha’s Ranji Trophy win, he was called up. The five-match Test series between England and India begins at Headingley, Leeds, on June 20. Edgbaston, Lord’s, Old Trafford, and The Oval host the remaining matches.
