ICC Suspends Cricket Canada Membership?
ICC suspends Cricket Canada from membership following confirmation of the governing body of Cricket Canada’s disciplinary action in relation to breaches of their obligations as an associate member. The ruling follows ICC’s Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) launching an investigation into allegations stemming from governance and compliance issues in the Canadian cricket administration.
The suspension of Cricket Canada was unanimously agreed to at a meeting of the ICC Board in Ahmedabad on Sunday. It comes as a response to the pressure the global cricket authority is putting on all the member boards to maintain good governance, particularly the associate cricket boards.
The ICC has made it clear that Cricket Canada’s national teams will be remaining eligible to participate in ICC events despite the suspension. Administrative restrictions can still exist and Canada can continue its participation in international tournaments.
The action is a result of growing interest following reports of irregularities that brought up a formal probe by the ICC’s ACU. There are no details of the investigation publicly available but the suspension indicates the governing body had enough reason to take action against the compliance framework of the federation.
The ICC suspends Cricket Canada membership decision reflects the ICC’s more stringent approach to enforcement of good governance in recent years. Transparency, anti-corruption and good administration have been a recurring theme and priority for the governing body for all member boards.
Cricket Canada is an Associate Member and is very active in the development of cricket in North America. But this suspension calls into question administrative changes and internal governance structures needed to re-establish membership rights.
