ICC Fines India for Over-Rate Breach
The international Cricket Council (ICC) officially sanctioned India cricket team after the team failed to keep the required over rate in the second ODI against South Africa, which took place in Raipur on December 3. India was found to be short of the target by two overs after the time allowances had been taken into consideration, leading to penalties according to the ICC Code of Conduct of the Player and the Player Support Personnel.
Article 2.22 provides that any team that does not bowl the necessary overs within the time provisioned is punished financially. Indian side will fine each player five per cent of his match fee every time an over is missed. KL Rahul, the captain of India, pleaded guilty, after being reported by on-field umpires, Rod Tucker, and Rohan Pandit, third umpire, Sam Nogajski and reserve umpire Jayaraman Madanagopal, thereby preventing the necessity of a formal hearing.
The chastisement comes after the hard-earned defeat of India in the match. The hosts made an enormous 358/5 in their 50 overs with Ruturaj Gaikwad and Virat Kohli responsible for 105 and 102 respectively. Nevertheless, the batting lineup of South Africa spearheaded by the century scored by Aiden Markram managed to pursue the target within 49.2 overs. Half-centuries were also important contributions made by Matthew Breetzke and Dewald Brevis.
The event highlights the need to over-rate discipline especially in high pressure games where time management is very essential. Even though India presented good batting performances, the low over rate and the ICC punishment thereafter reflects poor operations that must be resolved before the series is over.
With the third match of the three match series nearing the concluding ODI, India is confronted with a twofold task of continuing with aggressive batting on the one hand and to abide with ICC over-rate laws on the other. It is one of the important lessons to teams all over the world on the necessity of performance and protocol adherence balance in global cricket.
