Hungarian Prime Minister Orbán under fire at EU summit

COPENHAGEN (ANP) – There has long been irritation within the EU regarding the stance of Orbán. Increasingly, this is no longer kept behind closed doors but is openly expressed. For instance, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk asked Orbán on X on Thursday which side he is actually on: that of Russia or that of Ukraine, like the rest of Europe.
Orbán experienced the meeting on Wednesday and Thursday as a “fight,” his spokesperson wrote on X. Orbán referred to “coordinated attacks” from, among others, Croatia, Germany, and the European Commission.
Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof said after the discussions that the “principled disagreement” between most EU member states and Hungary “comes to the surface every time.”
In the meeting with EU heads of government, Hungary has “a very different view” on ending the Russian aggression war, Schoof said. Orbán believes that the EU should now be at the negotiating table. The EU wants that only when Ukraine is in a strong position and Russia is under heavy pressure, the Prime Minister clarified.
Afterwards, Orbán told the press that the EU has a war plan to defeat Russia. “Hungary rejects this. Europe must negotiate for peace, not for endless wars.”
