How South Africans Can Apply for a Turkish e-Visa (2026 Guide)

So you’re dreaming of baklava, bazaars and sunsets over Istanbul. Love that for you. Before you board that flight though, let’s talk visas. Specifically, the Turkish e-Visa for South African passport holders and how you can apply for it. Spoiler alert: it’s easier than you think. And no, you should not be paying a cent.

Do South Africans Need a Visa for Türkiye?

Yes. South African passport holders need an e-Visa to enter Türkiye.

But here’s the good news: it’s fully online, fast and completely free if you’re doing it right.

Where to Apply for a Turkish e-Visa (The ONLY Legit Site)

There is one official website. Just one.

That’s it. No alternatives. No “partners”. No agents.

Important heads-up

South Africans applying for a Turkish e-visa are now required to purchase mandatory travel insurance as part of the online application process.

According to the Turkish Embassy in Pretoria, e-visa applicants must pay a mandatory $12 (R192) travel insurance fee when submitting their e-visa application. The visa itself remains free of charge, but e-visas will not be issued unless the insurance fee has been paid.

The travel insurance payment option appears on The Republic of Turkey e-Visa Services website once applicants begin the online e-visa process.

There are loads of dodgy websites out there pretending to be official and asking you to pay.

If a website asks you to pay, you are on the wrong website.

Turkish e-Visa Details for South Africans

Here’s what you actually need to know, minus the embassy jargon:

  • Type: e-Visa (online application)
  • Number of Entries: Multiple-entry
  • Visa Fee: Gratis (No fee)
  • Admin Fee (including VAT): Gratis (No fee)

Yes, you read that right. Free-free. No hidden extras.

How the Turkish e-Visa Validity Works (Read This Carefully)

This part trips people up, so let’s keep it simple.

When applying, you will be asked to:

Please type the date you plan to enter Türkiye to the related field.

That date matters.

Example:

If you enter 30 March 2026 as your arrival date, the system will calculate:

  • When your e-Visa validity starts
  • How long your visa is valid for

 Important:
The validity period of your e-Visa starts on the day you enter Türkiye, not the day it’s approved.

Validity Period vs Period of Stay (Not the Same Thing)

Let’s clear this up once and for all.

  • Validity period: The timeframe during which your visa is usable
  • Period of stay: How long you’re actually allowed to be in Türkiye

Your period of stay cannot exceed the duration stated on the left-hand side of your e-Visa.

For example:

Your e- visa is valid from 30 March 2026 to 25 September 2026, a total period of 180 days but your stay cannot exceed 30 days depending if you’re on a single entry or multi-entry visa.

Want to stay longer?
You’ll need to apply for a residency permit at a local Police Station in Türkiye.

No shortcuts. No loopholes.

Overstaying Your Turkish Visa: Don’t Do It

The e-Visa system does not track your days for you.

That’s on you.

If you:

  • Stay longer than allowed
  • Do not have a residency permit

You could:

  • Pay fines
  • Get deported
  • Be banned from future travel to Türkiye for a period of time

  3. Fill in your personal and passport details
  4. Review everything carefully
