Governor of the CNB elected Vice-President of the ECB

BRUSSELS – The Governor of the Croatian National Bank Boris Vujčić received on Monday the support of the eurozone finance ministers for the post of Vice-President of the European Central Bank, and the steps that follow until formal confirmation are considered a formality.

Vujčić received support at a meeting of the finance ministers of the 21 eurozone member states and now it remains for the finance ministers of all 27 states to send a recommendation to the European Council, which formally makes the final decision.

Six candidates competed for the post of Vice-President of the European Central Bank, who will replace the Spaniard Luis de Guindos, whose term expires in May.

The Croatian Minister of Finance Marko Primorac said on Monday that the election of the HNB Governor Boris Vujčić as Vice-President of the European Central Bank is a great recognition for him personally and for the Republic of Croatia.

“Because of the reputation he has in international financial circles, his great expertise and many years of experience, he is a candidate who can greatly contribute to the work of the European Central Bank. This is a great success not only for Boris Vujčić but also for the Republic of Croatia,” said Primorac after the meeting of the eurozone finance ministers.

Primorac said that Vujčić was elected by acclamation after several rounds of voting.

The President of the Eurogroup, the body that brings together the eurozone finance ministers, Kiriakos Pierakakis, said that on Tuesday, before the start of the meeting of the Economic and Financial Affairs Council (Ecofin), that body will be informed about the decision of the Eurogroup.

Ecofin should then send a formal recommendation to the European Council, which will confirm the election of Boris Vujčić, after consultations with the European Central Bank and the European Parliament.

The European Council should confirm that decision at the summit in March, and Vujčić should take up his duties on 1 June. (19 January 2026)
