Gonzato with the new head of SPAK: The fight against corruption, a key element in Albania’s progress towards the EU

The Ambassador of the European Union to Albania, Silvio Gonzato, today met the new head of the Special Prosecution Office against Corruption and Organized Crime (SPAK), Klodjan Braho, who was elected to this position at the end of last year.

SPAK is one of the institutions established in the framework of the Justice reform in Albania, a reform strongly supported by the country’s international partners.

Gonzato made it known that he congratulated Braho for SPAK’s achievements to date and emphasized the importance of continuing tangible results in the fight against organized crime and corruption, which he described as a key element for Albania’s progress towards membership in the European Union.

According to Gonzato, strengthening investigative capacities and guaranteeing high standards in investigations and prosecutions are crucial for consolidating progress and achieving sustainable results.

“The European Union remains fully committed to supporting SPAK and the rule of law in Albania,” underlined Gonzato.

Klodian Braho was elected head of SPAK in December 2025 for a 3-year term, following the completion of Altin Dumani’s mandate.

In the conclusions published at the end of last year regarding the enlargement process, the European Council welcomed the considerable progress achieved by Albania, which has led to the opening of all negotiating chapter clusters, emphasizing that the course of the negotiations will depend mainly on progress in the “Fundamentals” cluster.

The Council has positively assessed Albania’s progress in implementing the justice reform and the advances made in the process of European integration, stressing the importance of maintaining the high standards set by the vetting process.

The Council also emphasizes that the independence of the judiciary and the role of the Special Structure against Corruption and Organized Crime (SPAK) must be respected. (6 January)
