Food, medicines: the EU wants stocks of essential products in case of war

European Parliament (Strasbourg, France) – The Commissioner for Crisis Situations, Hadja Lahbib, presented this project aimed at organizing the storage of essential products in case of war during a press conference on Wednesday at the European Parliament in Strasbourg.

“The more you prepare, the less you panic,” she summarized.

This strategy called “Preparation 2030” coincides with warnings issued by NATO about a possible attack from Russia in the next three to five years.

The idea is to anticipate stocks of certain basic products to ensure supply in the event of a natural disaster or even armed conflict. “This is a first for the EU,” Ms. Lahbib emphasized, and the goal is “very simple, to ensure that essential products that ensure the proper functioning of our societies are always available,” she further specified.

The Commission therefore wants to improve coordination, information sharing, and planning to ensure that sufficient stocks are available, in food, vaccines, masks, or medicines, while avoiding unnecessary duplication. (July 9, 2025)
