Fire in France: the EU “ready to mobilize” resources, “if necessary”

“We are closely monitoring the difficult situation of the fires in the Aude department,” said European Commissioner for Crisis Management, Hadja Lahbib, on the social network X on Wednesday.

The EU is “ready to mobilize” resources, “if necessary,” she added.

The President of the European Commission, Ursula Von der Leyen, stated that “Europe stands by France as the worst wildfires in its recent history rage in the Aude.”

Starting Tuesday afternoon from the village of Ribaute, between Carcassonne and Narbonne, this fire had ravaged 16,000 hectares of vegetation and pine forest by Wednesday evening. A 65-year-old woman who had refused to leave her home was found dead at her residence in Saint-Laurent-de-la-Cabrerisse, devastated by the flames.
