Final farewell to Russian gas in the EU
Brussels – The EU member states formally approved on Monday morning the autumn agreement to gradually phase out all gas imports from Russia. It will happen in stages, with liquefied natural gas being stopped no later than 1 January 2027, while the last deliveries via pipeline are to be stopped no later than 1 November the same year.
Hungary and Slovakia, both of which voted no on Monday, have however threatened to go to court to overturn the decision.
In connection with the decision, the environmental organization Greenpeace demonstrated against the fact that the countries of Europe are instead expected to increase their gas imports from the USA.
